At Mini First Aid, our aim above anything else; is to help keep you and your family safe through our range of first aid classes and weekly blogs. So we’re right behind Child Safety Week, run by Child Accident Prevention Trust (4-10 June).  This year’s theme is all about giving parents the skills, confidence and support to keep children safe. We’re bringing you a story from one of our parents this week. Caroline’s words say it all. With the skills Caroline learned from her Mini First Aid class, she stayed calm and knew what to do when her baby boy stopped breathing.

Caroline’s story

It started out as an exciting day. Caroline Crotty had just registered the birth of her 5 week old son Kevin. They were on their way home, when he suddenly stopped breathing in his car seat. Every parent’s worst nightmare. Caroline stayed calm and knew exactly what to do; having attended a Mini First Aid class 2 days earlier. Caroline performed baby CPR on Kevin and ultimately, saved his life. Kevin has since made a full recovery.

The doctors weren’t able to say for sure why Kevin had stopped breathing and think it is unlikely to happen again. He may have choked on mucus while crying or just decided it was too difficult to breathe and given up. Caroline’s words are a powerful reminder to parents about the importance of learning first aid:

“The course saved my little boy’s life. If I hadn’t have done it, I would have panicked and the outcome could have been very different.”

Since then, Caroline has turned what happened with Kevin into a real positive. Encouraged by Gemma, her Mini First Aid trainer; Caroline decided to learn more about first aid and completed her full 12 hour paediatric first aid course, aimed

Caroline knows first-hand just how important it is to stay calm and act quickly. Learning first aid is a life skill every parent should have. All our trainers are friendly, supportive and fully trained in paediatric first aid. So why not use Child Safety Week as the motivation you need to book onto a Mini First Aid course or encourage your friends and family to do one? Together we’ve got this.
